In music, a chord
is a combination of notes played together. They are three or more notes. However,
chords are not formed by simply combining any note you see on the keyboard.
There is a universal pattern or if you like, formula for deriving chords. This is
what we will learn today.
There are different
types of chords, and for the purpose of this post, i will be discussing a group
called the TRIADS.
Triads are chords
that are formed by 3 notes. In Nigeria, they are commonly referred to as Major
(doh, fa and soh triads) and minor (re, mi, la). These are for beginners, and
this is what this blog is all about; teaching the basics.
To start deriving
the chords, use the diagram below to number the notes of the key of C from 1 to
7.
Now the keys labelled 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, represent doh, re, mi, fa, soh, lah, ti on the key of C. These are the notes, and it is these notes we will combine to form the triads for the key of C.
- doh - 1,3,5
- re - 2,4,6
- mi - 3,5,7
- fa - 1,4,6
- soh - 2,5,7
- la - 6,1,3
- ti - 7,2,4
These keys can be played using inversions, to bring the notes closer to each other.
The chords above are for the key of C. How do you get the triads for other keys? well you must first know how to derive the notes for that key. I will discuss how to derive the notes for any key In my next post. stay tuned. feel free to comment and add contributions/suggestions.
